Check out Kool-Aid McKinstry’s very on-brand neck chain

Players tried to look their best at SEC Media Days in Nashville this week, but Alabama’s Kool-Aid McKinstry might have topped them all on Wednesday.

McKinstry was clad in a blue suit with criss-crossing peach-colored stripes and a patterned bow tie for his meetings with the media at the Grand Hyatt hotel. He completed the ensemble with a diamond-encrusted silvery double rope neck chain, with a large No. 1 pendant (for his uniform number) and a small Kool-Aid Man logo.

Here’s a close-up look from SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic:

McKinstry, whose given name is Ga’Quincy, got his nickname from his grandmother, who said his smile as an infant reminded her of the Kool-Aid Man. He’s gone exclusively by Kool-Aid since arriving at Alabama, which lists him as such on its official player roster.

As for the necklace, McKinstry said it’s all about letting his personality shine through.

“A lot of people who know me know that this is kind of me, and I love being me no matter where I’m at,” McKinstry said. “So, this is part of me.”

McKinstry, a junior from Pinson, has been listed on several preseason All-SEC teams this year and is a likely contender for All-America honors. He totaled 35 tackles, 15 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and a sack in 2022, and also averaged 15.8 yards on punt returns.

McKinstry wasn’t the only Alabama player sporting fashionable accessories on Wednesday. Offensive lineman JC Latham sported a large pendant with the letters TK (for “Trench King”) and a pair of spiked Christian Louboutin shoes, which retail for between $900-$1,300.
